Man Plummets To Death From 15/91 Freeway Connector: CHP

CHP says the man left his vehicle and fell from above and landed on the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 below.

The busy freeway connector was at a standstill on Tuesday night following a fatality from the overpass connecting ramp of the 15 and 91. A man perished Tuesday evening when he fell from the Inland freeway transition ramp, landing on the roadway below, the California Highway Patrol reported.

It happened just after 7:45 p.m. on the northbound I-15 connector to the SR-91 westbound.

According to CHP Officer Dan Olivas, the man – whose identity has yet to be released – stopped his vehicle on the transition road "...for reasons still under investigation." It does not appear that he had crashed.

"The male exited his vehicle, and for reasons still under investigation, fell from the transition road onto the I-15 southbound freeway below," Olivas said in a news release. "Upon arrival, the Riverside CHP units located the male lying in the #3 lane of I-15 southbound."

Several passing motorists tried to help the man, but he succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene, Olivas said. Two of the southbound lanes of the 15 were closed in the area while the incident was investigated.

This is not the first time someone has plummeted from that overpass. In March of 2016, a Whittier man fell from that same connector after crashing into barrels, according to the Press Enterprise.

The CHP is investigating the case and anyone who may have information about it is asked to contact the California Highway Patrol, Riverside Area at (951) 637-8000.
