SLIDE SHOW: Boys Water Polo Action From South Coast Tournament

Defending champion Mater Dei, the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1, rolls to big victories on their way to yet another tournament title.

Mater Dei High, the defending CIF Southern Section Division 1 champion, defended its title in the prestigious South Coast boys water polo tournament, defeating Newport Harbor, 16-7, Saturday afternoon at Newport Harbor High.

The Monarchs (11-0 this season and winners of their past 28 games in a row, dating back to last season) entered the match ranked No. 1 in the Division 1 coaches' poll, while the Sailors are No. 2.

Mater Dei beat another Sunset League team, Huntington Beach, 13-8 in the semifinals, and Newport Harbor rallied from a two-goal deficit with less than six minutes remaining to score score the final five points of the game and beat Los Angeles Loyola, 10-7.

Mater Dei, which won the inaugural Santa Barbara tournament last weekend, defeated El Toro in last year's South Coast championship game. The Monarchs have won the last six tournaments in which they have participated.

In Friday evening's quarterfinals matches, Mater Dei defeated Laguna Beach, 16-10; Loyola beat El Toro, 10-9; Newport Harbor defeated Los Alamitos, 9-4, and Huntington Beach upset Corona del Mar, 12-6.
