Mom-and-Pop Stores in CDM

In some places, mom-and-pop shops are facing tough times, but in Corona del Mar, they continue to thrive.

Shopping is a great pastime. The problem arises when you are trying to figure out where is the best place to get what you need.

Do you go to the big chain or the little independent? The mom-and-pop stores are known for providing quality and customer service, but the chain stores often offer better prices.

Still there's more to consider.

“I like to shop where salespeople find me, instead of the other way around. Who has time to hunt them down?" said Kim Josephs of Corona del Mar. "I can never find one when I need them in a department store.”

Mom-and-pop stores can be found on most towns' main streets. They are convenient for residents because they are part of the neighborhood. In walking communities, such as CDM, people don’t need to get in the car in order to make a purchase. Talk about convenience! The customer service and specialty merchandise are definitely what set them apart from the large department stores.

Resident Joanie Eames appreciates the simplicity.

"All business decisions are made on the spot, whether it’s a return or a gift wrap. No red tape, no switching departments, no runaround,” Eames said.

Shoppers tend to go to boutiques in search of unique items, but what they also receive is personal attention. Neighbors appreciate the small stores, and when they are loyal customers, they enjoy the recognition when the owners call them by name. I know I do.

Now, it can be argued that department stores provide a one-stop-shopping experience that can save time.

“I prefer the biggies because they have longer hours and a larger selection,” said resident Will Carlson.

We are fortunate to have a thriving business district in Corona del Mar filled with lots of the mom and pops, where customers can go and be appreciated for their patronage, and just down the way at Fashion Island we are spoiled with all those big department stores. So take your pick. And let me know if you find a good deal.
