Newport Beach Coastal Hazard: Strong Rip, Elevated Surf
The National Weather Service alerted Orange County beaches of a beach hazard through Monday night, high surf through Wednesday.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Orange County beaches should expect high surf and strong rip currents through Wednesday, according to a report from the National Weather Service in San Diego. Localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions will remain in effect through Wednesday.
"The beach hazard statement is in effect through Monday night for elevated surf and strong rip currents, with a high surf advisory and strong rip currents in effect Tuesday morning through Wednesday evening," the NWS said.
The highest tide will be upwards of 5.5 feet during the late evening hours, with the lowest tide around sunrise through Wednesday.

"Elevated to high surf and strong rip and longshore currents will increase the risk of drowning, especially for inexperienced swimmers," they said. Waves topping jetties are also possible.
Good for surfers, such as those captured by Laguna Beach photographer Greg Viviani. Not so good for novice ocean swimmers, however according to the National Weather Service.

"Although swells will lower Thursday and Friday, strong rip and longshore currents will continue to be a concern," the NWS stated.
Beachgoers should prepare themselves for strong currents by always swim near a lifeguard, according to the NWS, and if caught in a rip current relax and float, don't swim against the current.
"If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline," they said. "If you are unable to escape the rip current, face the shore and call or wave for help."
Never swim alone, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.
