Newport Mesa Community For Students Loves Teachers

This is Teacher Appreciation Week and five retired teachers who are a part of NMC4S Newport Mesa Community 4 Students write about teachers..

I have known and worked with over 500 teachers. I was blown away by them when I started teaching and am more in awe of them now. Teachers don’t just have one job. When they go to school every day, they have a cazillion jobs: custodian, nurse, psychologist, mother, dad, performer, artist, mathematician, mechanic, technologist, counselor, librarian, secretary, shopper, clothing inspector, life coach, and oh yeah…teacher.

And this year….they are the glue that holds kids together.

Well, here’s a BIG shout out to teachers as Teacher Appreciation Day! Only a teacher knows these feelings. Before the lesson is finished, you’re already thinking of the next day’s follow up. Who needs extra help? Why isn’t Johnny engaged? Does Rosie have an IEP? Oh, maybe I should call her mom. Why is Tien sad? Is something going on at home?

An idea pops in your head and you’re off and running, googling this and that, ready to launch a new lesson tomorrow.

Such is the life of a teacher. Teacher’s brains really work 24/ 7 and they often dream about lesson plans and how to be a better teacher.

We know it will be years before others and your students realize the personal sacrifices you made to convert your classroom into a distance learning adventure during COVID-19.

On this Teacher’s Appreciation Week, we salute you.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Day to all our Newport-Mesa teachers! Thank you for showing up every day to a classroom packed full of students with unique challenges, special gifts and wiggles. Thank you for heaping on them all the love and care and skills you have despite how bad you feel that day, how overwhelming the pile of papers or losing sleep fretting over how to reach the kid who struggles, the quirky kid who doesn’t fit in, or the gifted kid destined to become the next rocket scientist. Thank you now more than ever for meeting the unprecedented challenge to teach during the Corona Virus. In no time, you have transformed your job to teaching without your classroom of students and supplies and have switched over schooling to homes. Thank you for doing what you always do: showing up, being steady, and never giving up. You are our community’s miracle workers! Happy Teacher Appreciation Day!

Thank you to all the teachers who are working overtime to try and figure out how to best support their students via the internet. It is a HUGE challenge! An extra thank you to the special education teachers who have an additional challenge. Happy Teachers' Day.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Day to all of the incredible teachers that have done an awesome job during this new challenge of distant learning. Every teacher that I had the privilege to teach with considered themselves a life-long learner, and they have all risen to the task of learning how to teach their students remotely. Their goal was and continues to be to instill the love of learning in all of their students. Teachers are the frontline essential workers for every child enrolled in school! Happy Teacher Appreciation today and every day!
