North Orange County Beaches May Get More Sand As Early As 2024

In response to shrinking shorelines, Orange County officials moved forward with the long-awaited sand replenishment project on Tuesday.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Sand replenishment in Newport Beach could happen by late 2024, after Orange County officials gave an update on one long-anticipated sand replenishment project that they said could by ready to help the county's northern coastline by late 2024, the Orange County Register reported.

On Tuesday, county officials gave an update about the project, which is designed to replenish stretches of Orange County shoreline that have been eroding into the sea in recent years.

Officials said environmental studies and designs are almost complete for the Surfside-Sunset Sand Replenishment Project, which will gather up 1.75 million cubic yards of sand to drop-off at Surfside Beach.

According to the report, currents and waves will spread the sand south an anticipated 12 miles to fill in stretches of coast along Huntington Beach and Newport Beach.

“Our beaches are our livelihood and it is critical that they are protected and preserved for generations to come,” U.S. Rep Michelle Steel said at a press conference she hosted on the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach to give an update on the project. “We are one natural disaster away from devastation.”
