OCC Community Ed Class Gives High School Seniors Insight into College Life
Orange Coast College's Community Education department is hosting a series that will discuss how to navigate stress of being away from home
Where has the time gone? Your babies — they are finishing their senior year in high school and you are about to send them off to a university!
Are they ready? Will they remember all you’ve taught them about taking care of themselves, keeping themselves safe, making healthy choices? Do they really understand what it means, what it is going to feel like, to be away from home?
These are worries that most parents have as they send their kids off. As much as you may have tried to prepare them, even the most independent teens are known to struggle their freshman year in college.

Orange Coast College’s Community Education department is hosting a series that will offer real world examples and knowledge about what it’s really like to be away from home; what it means to live in a dorm or sorority house; what the social, financial, and educational pressures are and how to manage them. In four sessions teachers Therese Grande and Shannon Quihuiz will be discussing some of the main stressors and how to best navigate them away from home.

April 19, 7–9 p.m. — Financial Literacy, “Getting and Keeping Your Cash”
April 26, 7–9 p.m. — Healthy Relationships “Getting and Keeping Your Friends”
May 3, 7–9 p.m. — Health and Wellness “Getting and Keeping Your ‘You’”
May 10, 7–9 p.m. — Time Management “Getting and Keeping Your Sh*&% Together”

Therese Grande works in Curriculum and Instruction at Orange Coast College. A graduate of New York University with a bachelors in psychology, Therese spent her junior and senior years as an undergraduate Resident Assistant helping first-year students transition to college in one of the largest all-freshman residence halls in the country. Prior to joining OCC in 2013, she worked at NYU for 6 years in the Department of Housing and Residence Life.
Shannon Quihuiz is the Associate Dean, Title IX & Student Relations, at Orange Coast College, providing equitable complaint procedure administration and enhancing education and prevention initiatives. Shannon is a trained mediator and certified facilitator and has previously facilitated dialogues around issues related to social justice, intercultural communication, conflict, individual and group identity, and leadership development.
