Orange Coast College’s theatre department will stage a production of Tony Award-winning musical comedy “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” on May 6–8 and May 13–15. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Drama Lab Theatre each night except for May 15, when there will be a matinee performance at 2:30 p.m.

Based on the fast-paced and wildly funny book by Rachel Sheinkin, with music and lyrics by William Finn, the play tells the story of six middle-schoolers who are vying for a spelling championship in the fictitious “Putnam County.” The characters spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, pausing every so often to share stories from their home lives.

“‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ is a mix of farce, improv and music — this is a show that’s sure to put a smile on your face,” says director and OCC theatre instructor Naomi Buckley. “Come out and spell your heart out with us, and expect the unexpected!”
