📰 News we're reading

• Storm creates huge waves and dangerous currents at southern California beaches (sfchronicle.com) — Newport Beach lifeguards carried out 177 rescues Saturday as Hurricane Marie, churning offshore, sent powerful surf and dangerous rip currents slamming into local beaches over Labor Day weekend. Officials are warning only expert surfers should enter the water, urging everyone else to stay near lifeguards and off jetties while hazardous waves, runoff‑related pollution, and coastal flooding risks continue for the next couple of days.

• Oro, a trauma support dog for first responders, is the future of addressing mental health needs, officials say (yoursun.com) — First responders in Orange County, including Newport Beach firefighters, are increasingly turning to specially trained trauma support dogs to cope with the emotional toll of tragic calls. A new Aussiedoodle named Oro in Laguna Beach and similar dogs in Newport Beach and other agencies are helping crews open up during debriefings, easing stress and signaling a broader cultural shift toward mental health support in emergency services.
