NEWPORT BEACH, CA — The Newport Beach Police Department warned the public this week about recent reports of distraction thefts where jewelry and watches are targeted.

According to the department, the incidents have been happening in shopping center parking lots as well as residential areas where victims are running errands, walking in their neighborhood or riding their bikes.

During these thefts, a suspect will typically approach a victim and ask for assistance or directions before trying to offer a piece of jewelry as a "thank you," hug the victim — or distract the victim in any other way — before removing the victim's jewelry and fleeing.
