Two-Alarm Fire Scorches Home and Shop on Balboa Boulevard

Two people escaped injury when a fire broke out in an apartment above a retail space in Newport Beach.

At 11:29 p.m. on Friday, the Newport Beach Fire Department was notified of a structure fire in the 600 block of East Balboa Boulevard. A total of 17 units responded from the Newport Beach Fire Department and two assisting agencies: the Costa Mesa Fire Department and the Orange County Fire Authority.

The involved structure includes a retail space on the ground floor with a smaller residential space on the second level, which is where the fire originated. The residential area was occupied when the fire began, but the occupants were able to safely evacuate the structure.

The two-alarm fire was completely extinguished within 45 minutes of the original call and firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to any surrounding structures. There were no injuries or casualties reported at the scene.

The structure sustained significant fire damage to the top floor, as well as water and smoke damage to the ground floor. Damage is estimated at approximately $500,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
