Academy Awards Red Carpet: The Head-Turning, Head-Scratching Looks

HOLLYWOOD, CA —On a night that will go down as possibly the most unexpectedly memorable night in Academy Awards history, the red carpet delivered everything we’ve come to expect from the Oscars.

The trend for the night was decidedly Old Hollywood glam with trailing capes, lace trim and metallic embellishments. It was Hollywood of another era. One of the few reminders of our fraught times was a blue ribbon worn by many stars showing solidarity with the American Civil Liberties Union.

Possibly the biggest red carpet risk-taker of the 89th Academy Awards was actress and singer Janelle Monae, who went way, way back to a bygone era, bringing back the bustle (imagine trying to squeeze that into Dolby Theatre seat).
