2017 Oscar Winners Full List: Best Picture Erroneously Awarded To 'La La Land'

A complete recap from the 89th annual Academy Awards.

UPDATE 9:17 p.m. PST: HOLLYWOOD, CA — The 2017 Academy Awards will be remembered for its remarkable ending when presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway accidentally awarded the Oscar for Best Picture to “La La Land” when the actual winner was “Moonlight.”

PriceWaterhouseCoopers, which has overseen Oscar ballot counting for 83 years, later issued an apology for the blunder, saying in a statement that the presenters had been given the wrong card to read.

“We sincerely apologize to ‘Moonlight,’ ‘La La Land,’ Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for best picture,” the statement said. “The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.”

Producers of “La La Land” were in the middle of their tearful acceptance speeches when producer Jordan Horowitz had to stop and inform the audience a mistake had been made, insisting the award actually goes to “Moonlight.

Horowitz held up the card with "Moonlight" on it to prove it wasn't a joke.

“This is not a joke," he explained to the audience somewhat desperately as nervous laughter erupted throughout Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre Sunday night.

As the crew from "La La Land" was unceremoniously ushered from the stage, Beatty attempted to apologize for the error.

"I wasn't trying to be funny," he explained. "I opened the envelope, and it said 'Emma Stone, La La Land.' That's why I took such a long look."

Earlier, Stone won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Host Jimmy Kimmel attempted to calm the crowd while making light of the incident.

“Let’s remember it’s just an awards show," offered Kimmel. "I knew I would screw this show up. I really did.”

Such an error has never happened before in the history of the Academy Awards.

Mahershala Ali, who won Best Actor for his role in "Moonlight," admitted the mix-up soured the victory.

"It just threw me," Ali told City News Service. "I just didn't want to go up and take something from somebody ... it's very hard to feel joy in a moment like that."

"Moonlight" director Barry Jenkins took the misstep in stride.

"Even in my dreams this could not be true, but to hell with dreams, I'm done with it, 'cause this is true," he said.

"I will say that the folks from 'La La Land' were so gracious," Jenkins told the Los Angeles Times after the ceremony. "I can’t imagine being in their position and having to do that. I wasn’t speechless because we won. I was speechless because it was so gracious of them to do that. The card said: 'Best Picture: Moonlight'...It's unfortunate that things happened the way they did, but hot damn, we won best picture."

Leading up to the show’s dramatic ending, the 89th Academy Awards ran at a fast pace and with a lighthearted touch despite the heavy tone of many of the nominated films. The show opened with a song and dance routine by Justin Timberlake so good Kimmel predicted NSYNC would consider letting him back in the band.

The show had a bit of everything from the expected — “La La Land” taking home the award for Best Actress — to the unexpected — Denzel Washington performing an impromptu wedding ceremony for unsuspecting tourists: “He’s Denzel, so it’s legal.”

Kimmel kept his monologue quick, getting straight to the two elephants in the room with a biting jab linking racism in the film industry and President Donald Trump.

“As you know, the country is divided right now. I have been getting a lot of advice, people saying ‘you need to unite us.’ Let’s get something straight: I can’t do that." Kimmel said.

“I want to say thank you to President Trump. I mean remember when last year it seemed like the Oscars were racist," joked Kimmel. "That’s gone thanks to him.”

From there, the show quickly transitioned into the awards.

“La La Land,” nominated for a record-tying 14 Oscars, fell short of setting the record for most wins. However, “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle, at 32, became the youngest filmmaker to win the Best Directing Academy Award.

Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Fences." Casey Affleck won Best Actor for his role in "Manchester by the Sea," and Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Moonlight,” making him the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar.
