When Walt Whitman wrote about the “open road,” he inspired Woody Guthrie’s legendary hard-traveling in the 1930s; the purposeful meanderings of Jack Kerouac through the early postwar years; and the adventures of the 1960s Easy Rider generation and their successors. American Road (108 min.) delves into the artists, musical, and literary resonances of the mystique of the road. It premiered at Coachella 2013, where it won Best Documentary at the AMFM Fest.

Drinks and light refreshments will be available for purchase. Music by road musician, Steve Werner. The related exhibition, Route 66: The Road and the Romance, will be open to program attendees during the reception.
