Art Day and Open House in Angeles National Forest Sunday, June 14

Non profit offers opportunity to create, explore, relax, enjoy and get familiar with facility in the heart of the Angeles National Forest.

The shrill cry of a red tail hawk is carried on the breeze. Smaller birds flit and flutter through the chaparral. Lizards scurry about, pausing to take a defensive posture as you wander too close to the invisible boundaries of their territory. Life in the forest won’t bat a talon at the presence of a few more people in the neighborhood on Sunday.

Chilao School’s Art Day and Open House welcomes artists of all persuasions to come and spend the day, as well as artists of all ages. Allan Roman Reyes will be on hand to get children engaged in landscape painting. If they don’t have their own painting supplies, they can use supplies provided by Chilao School.

Getting children outdoors, connecting with their local wilderness and embracing artistic expression are worthy enough reasons to host the Art Day and Open House, but there’s opportunities for adults, too. Acres of them. It’s a chance to set up an easel in the wilderness and paint to the heart’s desire; to explore and photograph the forest, to make new friends, and to get familiar with Chilao School, a 2,000 square foot open class room that facilitates arts, culture and environmental programs, both by hosting them and by accommodating other groups.

The amenities are rustic, the scenery often compared to Sedona, Arizona, and the atmosphere peaceful, making it more than slightly unique at just an hour from downtown Los Angeles.
You can even plan a wedding here, particularly if you need your marriage certificate immediately; something only a Notary Public witnessing a marriage in the county of Los Angeles can offer. Chilao School? Got that.

Doors open at 10 AM on Sunday and light refreshments will be provided. The forecast calls for 80 degrees and sunny. Bring appropriate (closed toe) shoes, sunscreen and a hat if you wear them. The elevation is 5,200 feet. There is no set end time for the open house. Artists of all disciplines are welcome as are children and their families. USFS Chilao Visitors’ Center is located a mile and a half to the east in Chilao Campground, and Newcombs Ranch Bar and Restaurant, a popular Sunday location, is just a quarter mile farther away on Angele Crest Highway in mile 50.
