Beachwood Canyon Path to Hollywood Sign Reopens

Hikers can head for the hill for the first time since March when the Beachwood Canyon path to the Hollywood sign closed to visitors.

The Beachwood Canyon entrance to a trail that leads to a view of the Hollywood Sign reopened to pedestrians today.

A newly installed electric gate limits vehicle traffic to those headed to the Sunset Ranch horse stable, but gives hikers access during park hours -- from 5 a.m. to sunset daily.

The entrance was closed last March. Residents in the Beachwood Canyon area had complained of constant traffic congestion from people using roads in the area to get to the trail.

Some parking may be available for vehicles around the Beachwood Canyon area for people who want to hike to see the sign, but preferential parking rules that apply on weekends and holidays may limit space. City officials encouraged hikers who want to see the Hollywood Sign to use a path that begins at the Griffith Observatory.

Councilman Tom LaBonge said the gate is “designed to protect the community and park property during closed hours.”

“Park rangers and LAPD will continue to patrol the park so (residents) of Los Angeles and all visitors can come enjoy Griffith Park,” he said.
