Firefighters Battle Spot Fires Along 5 Freeway By Landfill

Firefighters are working to put out a series of small spot fires that broke out Thursday afternoon near the ​Sunshine Canyon Landfill.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Firefighters are working to put out a series of small spot fires that broke out Thursday afternoon near the Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Granada Hills.

A helicopter has been called into make airdrops on a small 20' x 20' brush fire burning near the Sunshine Canyon Landfill and the 5/14 interchange west of San Fernando Rd. It's one of several spot fires that have started in the area, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Nicholas Prange.

The blaze was first reported at about 2:30 p.m., Prange said. All the spot fires remain small.

Another, much larger blaze known as the Tick Fire is burning out of control in the Santa Clarita Valley. Within an hour, the fast moving blaze had eaten up hundreds of acres.
