McBroom Sweeps Past Montclair Prep With Two Kick-Return Touchdowns

Don't kick the football to Austin McBroom, or you might be sorry.

There's no one more dangerous in the opener field than the Campbell Hall speedster, a lesson host Montclair Prep of Van Nuys learned the hard way Friday at Pierce College, as McBroom scored on kick returns of 82 and 89 yards in a 31-22 Campbell Hall victory that should help the Vikings' playoff cause.

McBroom, a senior, has nine career kick returns for touchdowns, six last year and three this season.

"I wouldn't kick to him. There's no way," Campbell Hall coach Russ Gordon said. "I think that's a big risk. He's healthy again, and he can cause some teams some problems."

The win all but sewed up a playoff spot for the fourth-place Vikings (7-3), who've been battled tested in the tough Alpha League that includes state small-school powers Paraclete of Lancaster and Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth.

"Our playoffs started tonight. The Alpha league is the toughest in the division, and I am very proud of the way our team is playing," Gordon said.

Added McBroom: "It was our biggest game of the year. Our team is working very hard and heading into the playoffs in good shape."

R.J. Gordon, the coach's son, completed 12 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown, and Dustin Drai had five catches for 78 yards, including a 11-yard touchdown.
