UPDATE: 6 Killed - 2 Women, 4 Children - In Fiery Crash On I-5 Near Gorman

The victims' van was struck by a big rig, plummeted down the embankment and burst into flames. Others injured.

GORMAN, CA -- Two women and four children were killed today when their van -- which had stopped following a non-injury crash -- was struck by a big rig on the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway in unincorporated Gorman.

The accident took place at 3:30 a.m. near Gorman School Road, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.

A SigAlert was issued at Frazier Mountain Park Road, with all lanes blocked. After daybreak, only the two right lanes remained closed.

According to the preliminary investigation, the van, occupied by eight people, was involved in a non-injury crash with another vehicle, and it came to a rest partially blocking the slow lane and the right shoulder, the California Highway Patrol reported.

That's when a big rig slammed into the van, which went down an embankment and burst into flames, the CHP reported.

Two women and four children died at the scene, and two men were taken to a hospital in unknown condition. The names of the dead were withheld, pending family notification.
