In connection with the Autry’s exhibition Empire and Liberty: The Civil War and the West, this panel discussion explores the wide range of unfree labor found in the American West and considers the study of a society through the treatment of its labor force. In addition to discussing the historic enslavement of African Americans, speakers will focus on Afro-Cherokee freedmen, the slavery of Indians in California, and the indenture of peon workers and Chinese laborers. Panelists include Brenda Stevenson, UCLA; Fay Yarbrough, Rice University; Ben Madley, UCLA; and Stacey Smith, Oregon State. Moderated by author and journalist Hector Tobar.
