Depictions of Native Americans onscreen have changed dramatically over time, reflecting larger societal attitudes. Initially shown as warring savages, Americans Indians are now more commonly portrayed as a proud and diverse people.

In the landmark film Little Big Man, 121-year-old Jack Crabb (Dustin Hoffman) recounts his life to a historian. Crabb tells many astonishing tales, which include having been raised by Cheyenne Indians and befriending gunslinger James “Wild Bill” Hickok. He also claims to be the only white survivor of the infamous Battle of Little Big Horn.
