SUN VALLEY, CA — A village made up of more than 200 tiny homes opened Monday in Sun Valley as part of the city's effort to expand interim housing for people experiencing homelessness, according to the mayor's office.
Mayor Karen Bass joined Councilmember Imelda Padilla and leaders from Hope the Mission to unveil the new village, which will provide transitional housing for people moving off the streets and toward permanent housing.
The project is part of a broader city effort to build more than 500 tiny homes across Los Angeles, according to the mayor's office.
Bass said the city is using tiny homes in part to reduce the cost of its Inside Safe homelessness program and move away from relying on motel rooms for temporary housing.
"With hundreds of tiny homes now online and hundreds more under construction, we'll continue implementing innovative, cost-effective solutions to expand our ability to bring people in off the street," Bass said.
Padilla said the Sun Valley development is intended to provide residents with stability while they work toward permanent housing.
"These tiny homes represent more than shelter; they represent dignity, stability and a real first step toward permanent housing for our unhoused neighbors here in Sun Valley," Padilla said.
City officials have also pursued several broader initiatives aimed at increasing Los Angeles' housing supply.
