Man Caused Head-On Crash After Drunkenly Steering With Feet: Cops

LA sheriff's Investigators arrested a man on suspicion of driving under the influence during a crash he caused after steering with his feet.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Los Angeles sheriff's deputies arrested a 21-year-old man who allegedly caused a crash that sent fIve people to the hospital moments after he was recorded using his feet to steer his SUV, authorities announced Tuesday.

Victor Canasmoreira of Castaic was arrested at his home on Friday and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail following his arrest for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol with great bodily harm.

The crash occurred about 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 on Bouquet Canyon Road north of David Way, the station's public information officer Shirley Miller said.

Canasmoreira was driving south on Bouquet Canyon Road with three passengers when the speeding SUV crossed the double yellow lines and was struck broadside by a sedan, according to sheriff's traffic investigators.

"Shortly after the incident, investigators received information of a social media video that was streamed by one of the passengers in the SUV," according to the statement. "The video depicted the driver steering the SUV with his two feet."

In the Snapchat video, a man can be seen with his hands in his lap and one foot on the steering wheel, seemingly oblivious to the traffic in front of him. A voice can be heard in the background, narrating the scene.

"Casually just driving with your feet," laughs a woman. Minutes later both would be in the hospital, according to the mother of the 20-year-old girl who shot and posted the video.

Shaiela Phillip, the mother of the girl and of one of the other passengers in the car, is furious about what she describes as an irresponsible, alcohol-infused game.

"I was mad. I was really mad. I was mad at him being irresponsible with others lives, especially not one but two of my children," Phillips told CBSLA.

According to Phillips, her daughter said the driver had been drinking and ignoring pleas to slow down shortly before the crash. Los Angeles Sheriff's investigators have yet to confirm if alcohol was a factor nor have they confirmed if the man was driving with his feet when his SUV collided with a sedan driven by a 28-year-old Agua Dulce woman at about 10:30 p.m. Monday in Saugus.

Both drivers and all three passengers "suffered injuries ranging from minor cuts and abrasions to more severe injuries that included a fractured clavicle," according to a sheriff's department statement.

Blood samples taken from both drivers revealed that Canasmoreira's blood alcohol content was .05 percent, according to the sheriff's department. He tested negative for drugs. The other driver tested negative for both alcohol and drugs.

Because Canasmoreira was under the legal drinking age of 21 at the time of the crash, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol with great bodily harm and is facing prosecution, according to the sheriff's department.

Canasmoreira turned 21 on April 2, according to sheriff's inmate records.
