2 Arrested After Police Recover Stolen Vehicle In Novato

Police said the car had been reported stolen from Riverside County.

NOVATO, CA – Two people were arrested and a stolen vehicle was recovered Tuesday evening in Novato with the help of an automated license plate reader, police said.

According to the Novato Police Department, an officer discovered the stolen car while patrolling the parking lot of the Hamilton Market Place near Safeway at 5800 Nave Drive. Two adults and three children were found inside the car, which police said had been reported stolen from Riverside County four days ago.

Following an investigation, Sgt. Chris Andres said police arrested Christina Champeau, 29, and Paul Johnson, 26, on suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, possession of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia. Johnson also had two arrest warrants for alleged traffic and drug violations, Andres said. The children were taken into police protective custody.

Novato police have automated license plate readers mounted on several patrol vehicles and the readers recognize license plate numbers that are in a database. Officers said automated license plate readers also gather information that can assist in investigations.
