The fire started on the balcony where a family had been barbecuing, officials said.

NOVATO, CA – A fire at a 4-plex in Novato displaced three of four families Sunday evening, Novato Fire Protection District Chief Bill Tyler said.
The fire in the 100 block of Inyo Circle near the U.S. Highway 101 exit to South Novato Boulevard was reported around 7 p.m.
Tyler said the fire started on the balcony where a family had been barbecuing. Tyler said flames started burning the side of the unit and spread through vents on the balcony overhang into a common attic.
