Consumer Identity Theft Running Rampant

An identity theft epidemic has hit consumers all over the country.  Many people have been targeted by thieves who access personal information on documents and paperwork that are carelessly thrown away.  Consumers may not care or realize that the personal information on documents is available to anyone who wants it after you have thrown it away. 

There are a few guidelines to abide by when managing your important documents.  A general guideline is to keep your tax documents for 7 years before disposing of them properly.   It is also suggested that your IRA contribution records are kept permanently, while insignificant bills should be kept for a year or more. 

Protecting yourself has never been more important.  Shredding documents, tax returns, bills or anything else with sensitive information is a major step towards protecting your identity.  Whether it is done on an annual basis or a more regular schedule, it needs to be done. 

There is a local event coming up that will allow you to take advantage of free shredding services which is open to the public.  On Saturday, April 27^th 2013 Valley Oak Wealth Management will be holding an annual shredding event to help you properly dispose of your collected documents.  It will be held from 9:00AM until 12:00PM at the Valley Oak offices at 2 Ranch Dr. Novato, CA 94945.  Shredding will be done on-site to protect your privacy.  There will be refreshments available and more information on the importance of document organization and disposal.  If you should have any questions, call Gail Neal at (415) 898-4439 or email info@valleyoakwm.com.
