'The Big Pave' Gets Underway On Hwy 101

The new asphalt should eliminate the "teeth-rattling" 14 miles between Windsor and Cloverdale.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA – The U.S. Highway 101 Roadway Rehabilitation Project, better known as "The Big Pave" in northern Sonoma County got under way with a groundbreaking ceremony Friday.

The $73.6 million first phase between Windsor and Geyserville includes six inches of new asphalt overlay on the highway and on- and off-ramps. Metal beam guardrails will be replaced and curb ramps will be
upgraded in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Construction will begin northbound from Dry Creek Road in Healdsburg to Geyserville then south on the highway to Old Redwood Highway in Windsor.

Phase two paving is from Geyserville to Cloverdale. The $82 million second phase also includes culvert replacement starting in late 2020.

Former Sonoma County Supervisor and current State Senator Mike McGuire said the "teeth-rattling" 14 miles of roadway between Windsor and Cloverdale is one of the worst in the Bay Area.

"The short term will be tough for commuters while the road is being repaired, but residents and visitors alike will love the improvements that begin to blossom in the months to come," McGuire said.
