Marin Women's Commission: Preserving Equality in Marin

Marin Women's Commission has been working for equality in Marin since 1974. Read about their work in our community, here.

Just over fifty years ago, the first National Commission on the Status of Women illuminated the regulations and traditions that prohibited women from achieving equal status in society. Following the Commission’s report, many states, including California, established similar state regulatory commissions. Marin, a trailblazer on many issues, went a step further and established the Marin County Commission on the Status of Women in 1974.

Authorized to examine and eliminate gender discrimination in Marin County, the Marin Women's Commission (MWC) has been instrumental in giving women and girls both the resources and opportunities to advance their economic status. Dedicated to advocating for equity, diversity, self-sufficiency, leadership, and access to resources that enhance the quality of life for Marin County women at all stages of life, the commission is comprised of eleven commissioners--ten district commissioners and one at-large commissioner. Working closely with agency partners and advocacy groups, the commission has produced the Law Center for Women & Children, the Marin Women’s Hall of Fame and works to promotes breast cancer awareness and accessibility to heath and safety resources with the Women's Resources Card.

Thanks to MWC Commissioners and volunteers, the strong ideals of equity and justice continue to be well protected.
