I’m always curious about the things people generally don’t talk about. So when I came across this topic I was interested in this matter of practicality for caregivers, and wanted to share with you what I learned.
Caregivers and cars. Not something most people think about until they become a caregiver and discover that their two door bucket-seat, tinted window, ‘smooth ride’ may not be up to the task of driving around a loved one with limited mobility.
The connection between automobiles and caregivers is gaining more attention as the number of those taking care of loved ones grows. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that 21 percent of the adult population is caring for another adult. That’s 44 million Americans in caregiver roles, without counting adults who are caring for children.

And those caregivers are providing transportation for those too elderly, ill or young to drive.
So if you find yourself rethinking the practicality of your vehicle, you’ll be glad to know that AARP recently printed an article on the topic. It offers guidelines to consider when shopping for a car that can actually make your caregiving tasks easier.

Recommendations include:
1) Minivan and crossover vehicles offer greater ease of entry. They often have hip level seats that are easier for adults to get into and out of.
2) Remote-opening rear hatches could make it easier to load (and unload) a wheelchair or other equipment.
3) A built-in navigation system means you can be guided quickly to unfamiliar places. This is especially important in the case of an emergency.
4) Fuel-friendly. If a great deal of travel is anticipated, fuel efficiency can ease the budget.
5) A voice activated phone system so you can notify the doctor if you are running late, etc.
6) Communications systems that can alert roadside services that you need assistance.
There are, of course, other features, including customized ramps and more. Check with local dealers to determine which vehicles best suit your needs. And, remember to drive safely.
