Caregiver's Wish List

Services and Assistance Your Caregiver Might Want.

When one becomes a caregiver, the needs of others often become top priorities; they take precedent over individual desires and needs. When that happens the caregiver can become depleted. In some cases those unmet needs and desires can be purchased. For example, housecleaning services and prepared meals can be ordered. But what about the items and/or experiences that can’t be bought? Here are a few elements that a caregiver in your life might have on her or his wish lists:

• Positive reinforcement from others. Caregiving is not an easy task. It is easy to question whether or not a right decision has been made. Hearing positive feedback from others that supports choices as well as the courage to make them can make all the difference.
• For others to reach out and not lose social connections. Caregiving can be a demanding job and can, in turn, result in isolation. Sometimes all a caregiver may need from others is an understanding friend who checks in from time to time to find out how things are going.
• Someone who will listen. Everyday can be a challenge and, in an effort to cope, a caregiver may keep emotions bottled up. Having someone able to openly listen can help ease the stress.

Caregiving for a loved one is not an easy task. It can sometimes become overwhelming. It is important to remember that the caregivers are people, too, with human needs that can, in many cases, be replenished in simple ways. A vote of confidence, or shoulder to lean on can go a very long way for the caregiver. Such nourishing care also make a difference, ultimately, for the one being cared for. It’s a win-win for everyone.
