Changes Coming to FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps

San Rafael, CA – Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have committed to attend informational meetings in Marin County to inform citizens in coastal communities about the FEMA-led San Francisco Bay Coastal Study. Marin residents who live within a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) along the bay shoreline might be affected by the study.

Two meetings scheduled in October were cancelled because of the federal government shutdown and have been rescheduled later this month.

Through its Flood Hazard Mapping Program, FEMA identifies flood hazards, assesses flood risks and partners with states and communities to provide accurate data to guide them toward mitigation actions. The Flood Hazard Mapping Program is part of the National Flood Insurance Program.

Changes in the maps might mean a change in flood risk classification for some property owners or add properties to a Special Flood Hazard Area. The draft maps will be available for viewing at the two Marin meetings. Following additional public notice, the final revised maps based will be issued for formal review and comment in January 2014.

Here is the schedule:
