Councilmember's Column (May 18 - May 24)
Councilmember Eric Lucan shares city news, events and meetings on the horizon, and on occasion a few spontaneous thoughts.

On my Mind
I started my morning at Valley Memorial Park in Novato for the 34th Annual Memorial Day Celebration honoring the 600+ veterans who are buried there along with all the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom. One of the highlights of the ceremony is seeing the many generations in attendance including veterans, active military, community members, ROTC cadets from Novato High School, and Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from local troops.
Every year the scout troops arrive an hour before the ceremony and place flags at the final resting places of the veterans who are buried at the park. The exercise provides a valuable lesson for the scouts. Part of the ceremony this year included the dedication of new benches at the park in honor of each branch of the military. Special thanks to John Sammons for putting the event together, the Novato Elks Lodge for their help, and George Estes and Valley Memorial Park for their commitment to honor those who served. May we always remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Here are some pictures from the event.
Around Town
Hill Recreation Area Community Meeting – On Wednesday, I attended the community meeting for the Hill Recreation Area. As someone who grew up playing soccer on those fields and then coaching teams on them, it is exciting to hear some of the ideas being discussed. If you missed this one, a repeat meeting will be held this Saturday at 10AM. There will also be additional workshops in the future.
Congrats to the Novato High Girls’ Lacrosse Team – On Thursday, the Hornets took home the NCS Division I banner and became the first ever Marin girls team to do so.
