Crews Battling Fire in Novato; 1 Firefighter Injured [UPDATED]

BREAKING: The Cambridge Fire broke out Monday evening near Sunset Parkway.

NOVATO, CA — Firefighters from Novato, Marin County and Cal Fire are battling a vegetation fire Monday evening, the Novato Fire District reported.

As of 10:50 p.m., the Cambridge Fire near Sunset Parkway was between four and five acres in size and 75 percent contained, officials said.

According to Novato fire Spokeswoman Sandy Wargo, the fire broke out just before 6:30 p.m. and is burning on a hill that is thick with trees, shrubs and tree trunks. Crews are stationed around the perimeter of the base of the hill and will remain there until the fire is out, she said, adding that it would be too dangerous to send crews up onto the hilltop.

A female firefighter suffered first- and second-degree burns to her legs and was taken to Kaiser Hospital to be treated, Wargo told Patch in a phone interview. The firefighter has since been released from the hospital.

No evacuations are currently in place, but earlier, Wargo said, 15 residences were evacuated as a precaution. Several residents also self-evacuated early on, but were back in their homes Monday evening, she said.

"All residents are safe at home," Novato Fire District stated in a Nixle alert. "School is in session tomorrow as usual."

According to Wargo, multiple callers have asked whether school will be in session Tuesday. She said the closest school to the fire is San Jose Middle School, which is not affected.

In addition to mutual aid from Marin County Fire and Cal Fire, Wargo said the Novato Police Department is on scene conducting traffic control.

Several fire investigators are also on scene working to determine the cause of the fire, she said.

"We are not leaving until it is out," Wargo said. "We do think we will be here for several more hours."
