December's Good News

3 winter news stories to brighten even the darkest night

Even during this busy time of year we can find a few moments to enjoy – even share – the good news that surrounds us.
Here are some examples of good news I’ve heard about:

  • 99-Year-Old Wins Shopping Spree At 99 Cent Store, Buys Gifts For Kids In Need. This Beverly Hills kind heart went on a stocking stuffer excursion that will used the fill to the brim numerous Christmas stockings for children who might not otherwise have a Christmas this year.
  • Cop and Teen Defuse Tension by Having a Dance-Off. A Washington D.C. police officer demonstrates how to deal with teen girls without brutalizing them. A 17-year-old girl walked up to an officer who was there to break up a street fight. Once she started playing music on her phone, the cop challenged her … to a dance-off. Afterwards the girl said this was the first positive interaction she’d had with police officers in her neighborhood.
  • Lonely Elderly Man Calls Radio Station, Host Does the Nicest Thing. A lonely, elderly United Kingdom man called into BBC Radio because after his wife went into a nursing home he just wanted someone to talk to. The show host brought him to the station and he got to tell his story to listeners. He was touched almost to tears by the outpouring of support other callers offered.

The kindness and creative caring of others is remarkable any time of year. In the heart of winter’s darkness, it takes on an extra sheen, reflecting back to us our best selves.

I hope you enjoy the season’s good will whenever and wherever you find it.
