Healthy DIY probiotic beverages can be made at home at a fraction of the cost of buying kefir or kombucha at the store. Learn more and get started here.

Start making these refreshing drinks at home to quench your family's thirst and provide a healthy alternative to other sweetened or caffeinated beverages.

Water kefir is an easy and inexpensive beverage you can make and enjoy at home. By lacto-fermenting kefir "grains" you wind up with an amazing drink that can be flavored however you want (see suggestions below). The process to make it is easy and the results are delicous --- an effervescent drink that you can flavor. Water kefir is truly a delicious, probiotic-rich, health-promoting beverage your whole family will enjoy.

I've been brewing kefir for years from the same original starter culture I bought over 3 years ago for under $20!

You can buy a starter kit where I got mine at Cultures for Health. It includes:

  • One packet Water Kefir Starter Grains (in a dehydrated packet)
  • Detailed instructions and recipes
  • Plastic Mesh Strainer (kefir doesn't like metal and you need a strainer)
  • 1/2 ounce Concentrace Trace Mineral Drops (kefir will be happier with minerals)
Originating in Mexico, water kefir grains are incredibly easy to brew, the starter culture can create a new batch of kefir every 24-48 hours. This makes a fantastic non-dairy alternative to milk kefir and can be flavored after brewing to make a variety of delicious sodas.

You and your family will love it!
  • Gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan
  • Reusable culture; makes a new batch of kefir every 24-48 hours
  • With proper care, the culture can be used indefinitely to create delicious probiotic rich kefir
  • Cultures on the counter at 67-80°F, no heating appliance required
  • Can be used with sugar water, fruit juice and coconut water
When you receive your water kefir starter kit, the grains will be in a dehydrated state in a barrier-sealed packet and will need to be re-hydrated prior to use. Please keep in a cool dry place until you are ready to make your first batch of kefir.

My top 5 Kefir Flavors:
  1. Any combination of fresh or frozen berries
  2. Lemon, ginger, mint (slice lemon and ginger thinly and use fresh mint or a tea bag)
  3. Mulberry, goji and Chinese red dates
  4. Fig with raspberry and ginger - in fig season (it's spectacular)
  5. White grapes sliced in half for a virgin wine spritzer
