Elderly Bicyclist Hit, Killed in Novato
The coroner's office has identified the man as a local resident.
NOVATO, CA- The Marin County coroner’s office has identified a bicycle rider who died after a collision with a vehicle in Novato Tuesday afternoon as 80-year-old Paul Hess of Novato.
Hess died at 1 a.m. Wednesday at Stanford Hospital in Santa Clara County, Marin County Chief Deputy Coroner Darrell Harris said.
Hess was riding south on the east sidewalk of Seventh Street at 3:17 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle making a left turn onto southbound Seventh Street from a private parking lot at 936 Seventh St., Novato police Sgt. Eric Riddell said.

The 16-year-old female driver, a Novato resident, stopped at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, Riddell said.
Hess was transferred from Marin General Hospital to Stanford Hospital and died during surgery, Riddell said.

Novato police requested that the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office relinquish its jurisdiction of the location of Hess’s death to Marin County, Harris said.
Neither Hess nor the teen driver appeared to have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Riddell said.
The collision happened at a slow speed, but the driver rolled over Hess causing significant injuries, the sergeant said.
