Black History in Marin: From the Spaniards through the Great Migration

In celebration of Black History Month, historian Marilyn Geary will be speaking on African American history in Marin. The majority of African-Americans migrated to Marin from the Deep South during World War II, but the earliest Blacks came as settlers and slaves prior to the Civil War. This talk will uncover the history of African-Americans in Marin from the first arrivals through the Great Migration. It highlights individuals, including John Pinkston, Nat Smith and Daniel Brown, who made unique contributions to Marin’s early history.


Marilyn L. Geary is a writer, personal historian, and owner of Circle of Life Stories, a history recording service. Marilyn has published Marin City Memories, stories of African-Americans who worked at Marinship during World War II, and LeaveLight, a guide to end-of-life planning. Her projects include the film Marin Mind/Scapes and The Madonna del Lume, a Library of Congress Legacy project.She has authored a history column Traces of Old San Rafael for the San Rafael Patch.
