The new year is a time for new beginnings. Generally, new beginnings are resolutions, changing behaviors, progressing towards something new, or turning over a completely new leaf. It’s easy to generalize about kick starting your life into a more positive set of patterns, but what tangible things can you do to begin accomplishing these goals? The Mod Girls have come up with a list of things that will inspire you to reach your aspirations this upcoming year and to open yourself up to new experiences and a more fulfilled sense of being.
1. Create a Vision Board
It’s 11:49 on New Year’s Eve and your New Year’s resolutions are documented. You’re ready for action. Unfortunately, these clear goals are easily forgotten when everyday life begins to take shape again. By the time Spring rolls around, you’ve completely lost sight of these elusive goals. However, you can keep the commitments you make to yourself on New Year’s Eve by creating a Vision Board that provides a visual representation of who you want to be in 2014.
Made famous by The Secret, Vision Boards act as a constant and at times, subliminal reminder of your goals. Whether your goal is to be healthier, closer to family, or more successful, paste pictures of these scenarios on a piece of card stock and hang it where it will inspire you every single day. And as a neat side note, it is scientifically proven that an image is processed by the human brain at least 800x faster than words alone. So, it is true that a picture says a thousand words. Get visual in 2014!

2. Send a Handwritten Letter
If your resolution this year is to be more caring or thoughtful, start by sending a handwritten letter. When I wade through bills and junk mail, I can’t explain the wonderful feeling I get if I come across a letter from my pen pal. A physically handwritten letter is so personal and requires you to stop your busy life to open it and read it. You can’t multi-task while reading that special letter than someone put time and energy into dedicating to you. A letter is also a very introspective process that requires more thought and care than a quick text message or voicemail. Take the time write a letter this year and you may be pleasantly surprised to receive one in return.
3. Technology Detox Once Day a Week
We all have such good intentions about making space in our lives for more important things, but the overused excuse is that there isn’t enough time in the day. Vow to make one day a week a Technology Detox Day. Go the entire day without televisions, ipads, computers, and cell phones. If that seems a little unrealistic, then try eliminating just one device that day. You will be amazed at how long the day really is when you aren’t mindlessly cruising Facebook and keeping yourself from thriving in the moment. Be present in any given situation and you’ll experience something new, vibrant, and peaceful about just being.

4. Restore a Piece of Furniture
Out with the old, in with the new. Do you have a resolution this year to freshen up your decor? Don’t buy new furniture, instead, find a piece via Craigslist or a consignment shop that could use a fresh stain or a creative coat of paint and turn into something original, uniquely your own. Or, breathe new life into one of your existing pieces. This process not only becomes an affordable way to decorate, but it also allows for artistic expression and provides a sense of accomplishment and appreciation for your personalized furniture.
5. Create a Piece of Art
Just like restoring furniture, why go out and buy new art? Create your own art this year! You don’t have to be the Picasso; be your own Picasso. Artistic expression is your own personal manifestation of thoughts, feelings, and energy. Purchase a piece of framed canvas from the art store and apply colors to match your decor using abstract patterns. The act of abstract painting can be very liberating and can help to relieve stress after a busy holiday season. Plus, you will have an affordable piece at the perfect size that matches your decor. Don’t forget to sign it and stand proud when your friends and family ask where you bought it.
6. Give Five to Ten Dollars
We all have resolutions to be more charitable but it goes back to I don’t have enough time or I don’t have enough money. However, technology makes it super simple to personally give back with crowd funding sites like Go Fund Me or Crowd Rise. Make it a point on payday to visit one of these sites and donate 5 to 10 dollars. It will give you a more inspired feeling than a new pair of shoes.
