Funding Needed For Novato Man Shot In Head

Alex Madias, 26, is in critical condition after being shot during a robbery. Loved ones are fundraising for him on GoFundMe.

NOVATO, CA -- Fundraising was underway Wednesday for a beloved Novato man who is in critical condition after being shot in the head during a robbery. Alex Madias, 26, was shot after being robbed at an Amtrak station in Emeryville, the Marin Independent Journal reported.

The Journal reported "Madias was dropping off a friend at the train station that night when a robber approached and demanded money" around 9 p.m. Sunday at the station. The gunman remains at large.

Madias is in the hospital where he remains in critical condition with a long road to recovery, according to the GoFundMe page created for him.

"Months of hospital beds, transferring and if all goes well months of recovery," the fundraising page said. "The funds collected will go towards helping the family cope with Alex's ever-changing condition while he, his wife, and family put their lives on hold to be with him. It is difficult to predict how we will need to use the money. Should anything happen that leaves us with additional funding than necessary, the money will be redirected to supporting other victims of violent crimes."

Loved ones described Madias a "kind-hearted person" who is active in the community.

"He volunteers at his church, raises guide dogs, and is an Eagle Scout," the GoFundMe page said. "His wife and high school sweetheart work and live in Marin as does his brother, father and mother. He is a kind soul who enjoys giving back in so many ways."

As of Wednesday, the campaign raised $20,000 of its $50,000 goal.
