Get a Taste of Soul with Chef Tanya Holland

Try a signature menu this week from Chef Tanya Holland of Brown Sugar Kitchen, whose new cookbook was named "Cookbook of the Week" by Yahoo!

Chef Tanya Holland, who has won a wide following with her culinary flair at Oakland’s Brown Sugar Kitchen and B-Side BBQ, presents a special menu from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Fresh Starts Chef Events in Novato.

In this repeat visit to our kitchen, she’ll demonstrate recipes from her brand-new new cookbook,”Brown Sugar Kitchen: New-Style, Down-Home Recipes from Sweet West Oakland,” which was named “Cookbook of the Week“ by Yahoo Food. We’ll have cookbooks available for purchase; get a personal autograph!

• Beignets with Jam

Along with being chef/owner of two restaurants, Chef Tanya serves as a host and expert on soul food for the “Melting Pot” series on Food Network. A pioneer of the “New Soul” movement, she’s also showcased her talents on “The Today Show” on NBC and “The Talk” on CBS.

Chef Tanya studied at La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine in Burgundy, France, and began her restaurant career in New York City, with stints in farflung kitchens before settling on Oakland.

The event takes place in the showcase kitchen at the Next Key Center, 1385 N. Hamilton Parkway, in Novato. All proceeds benefit shelter and job-training programs at Homeward Bound of Marin.
