At Fresh Starts Culinary Academy, students learn a lot by doing.
That spirit led to a new product this fall: the Homeward Bone dog biscuit, an all-natural treat made with peanut butter and molasses. Proceeds benefit not only Homeward Bound but also the Novato Police K-9 Unit.
The idea hatched with input from local Realtor Toni Shroyer, an active supporter of the K-9 team, and leaders in the culinary job-training program pounced on it.
Fresh Starts students already make pizza for Novato Charter School, Halo HomeMades jams and preserves, and Halo Truffles crafted with Belgian chocolate, along with catering events in The Key Room, an on-site event venue at the Next Key Center.
Homeward Bone biscuits are another avenue for reinforcing culinary skills. Students in the training course mix and package them, putting into practice what they’ve learned about measurements, operating kitchen equipment and kitchen hygiene.
“It’s not super-complicated but still has to be done according to professional and hygienic standards,” says Rocky Packard, who heads social enterprises at Homeward Bound. “A range of projects is good for building their skills.”
