Man Arrested After Arson Fire Burns Near Novato Homes: Police
The blaze burned about 450 square feet at Slade Park, near the SMART train tracks, according to the Novato Police Department.

NOVATO, CA — A man was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of arson after a fire burned within 100 feet of inhabited homes in Novato, police said.
Vathana Khiev, a 41-year-old transient, was arrested Saturday night after the fire burned about 450 square feet at Slade Park, near the SMART train tracks, according to the Novato Police Department.
Investigators found partially burned material that appeared to have been thrown over a fence into dry grass near the train tracks, leading investigators to believe the fire was intentionally set, police said. Officers found a witness who provided a physical description of a subject seen in the area.

Khiev was found hiding in the area of Redwood Boulevard and Olive Avenue, about a half-mile from the fire. He was positively identified as the subject seen earlier near the scene of the fire, police said. Partially burned material matching specific evidence found at the scene was also in Kiev's possession, and soot was found on his shoes and clothing.
Khiev was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of arson, possession of drug paraphernalia and probation violation.
