Meet an “Amazing” Wrote A Hit Song to Now Winning a Gold Medal
"Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" songwriter now races in Senior Games

Elmo Shropshire, 80, may have made his living as a veterinarian, who founded his own animal hospital, but he was best known for many years as the singer/song-writer of the hit tune, “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer.” A fun song that took a few years to take off, when it did, in 1982, it out-performed Bing Crosby’s ‘White Christmas’ as the most popular Christmas song for a full six years! But now, Elmo is making a name for himself in a very different way. Just this past year (2016), in the Florida Senior Games, Elmo took a gold medal in the men’s 1500-meter race, silver in the 800-meter event, and finished second out of seven runners in his age group in the 5K road race. His opinion of the games: “This is just so much fun!”
