Novato Home Damaged by Brush Fire

Novato, CA — A two-alarm fire that started in juniper bushes spread to the exterior back and interior attic of a two-story home in the San Marin area of Novato on Sunday evening.

The fire in the 400 block of Wood Hollow Drive was reported at 6:18 p.m., Novato Fire Protection District spokeswoman Sandy Wargo said.

A man who rented the second story of the home with his children was unable to extinguish the fire with a garden hose, Wargo said.

Sparks from the 1.45-acre vegetation fire spread to the interior attic and the heat from the fire melted PVC water sprinkler pipes, Wargo said.

"The water flow from the pipes kept the fire at bay," Wargo said.

An attached "granny unit" on the first floor where a woman who owns the home and her daughter lived was spared fire damage but sustained water damage, Wargo said.

Flames were contained to the back of the house and attic.

Firefighters called a second alarm because other homes are located in the area, according to Wargo.

Firefighters from San Rafael, Marinwood and the Marin County Fire Department also responded.

The man and his children were displaced, Wargo said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
