Novato PD: Do You Know About Our Social Host Ordinance?
The police department issued a statement about the ordinance this week.
The following is a message from the Novato Police Department:
With the onset of prom, graduation and summer, the traditional celebration season commences for Marin County youth. This spring and summer, the Novato Police Department will be actively working to keep our young people safe through increased monitoring and enforcement of the City of Novato’s Social Host Ordinance.
In 1992, Novato adopted a Social Host Ordinance that holds adults 18 years of age or older legally and civilly liable if underage youth drink in their homes. When a party with underage drinking is reported or observed, police can break up the party and ensure everyone gets home safely, as well as issue citations to the youth in attendance and the property owner.
The Social Host Ordinance is a resource for community members. If you are aware of a party, or there is a party in your neighborhood, you can report it anonymously. We encourage you to call us if you are concerned that a party with young people is getting out of hand. We are here to help – and we share your commitment to keep our children safe.
