​Novato Residents Caught Breaking Into Cars, Mailboxes: Police

Two Novato residents were arrested on suspicion of possessing property stolen from vehicles and mailboxes in Larkspur, police said.

NOVATO, CA — Two Novato residents were arrested early Wednesday morning on suspicion of possessing property stolen from vehicles and mailboxes in Larkspur, the Central Marin Police Authority said.

A resident in the 100 block of Madrone Avenue called police around 2:35 a.m. to report two people going through his unlocked Jeep in his driveway.

Police found a man and woman walking nearby whose clothing matched the description of the suspects given by the resident.

David Cuevas, 34, of Novato was wearing a headlamp and carrying a flashlight and a window punch tool, police said. Cuevas also had property belonging to the Jeep owner, two different sets of keys, assorted gift cards and a canister of pepper spray, police said.

Leticia Algere, 41, of Novato, was found with property and a vehicle registration from an address on Bridge Road located directly behind Madrone Avenue, police said.

Officers found mail from several addresses on the ground and several open mailboxes on surrounding streets. The suspects' nearby vehicle contained more mail, packages and property, and it was impounded.

Cuevas was booked in the county jail on suspicion of conspiracy, possession of stolen property, mail theft, possession of burglary tools and being a felon in possession of tear gas. He is scheduled to appear in Marin County Superior Court Friday.

Algere was booked into jail on suspicion of conspiracy, possession of stolen property and committing a crime while on bail for similar crimes allegedly committed on Nov. 20 in Kentfield.

Her court date is Thursday.

Police said some of the cars that were burgled were unlocked.
