NOVATO, CA — The Novato Unified School District recently recognized a Sinaloa Middle School eighth-grader for competing in the International History Olympiad, held in July at the University of Hawaii.

In order to compete in the event, Izagani Aquino first had to qualify at the Northern California History Bee Regional Championships in San Jose. He then placed in the top half of his division at the National History Bee in Chicago, which qualified him for international competition.

In Hawaii, Izagani competed with a group of seven other middle school students from around California. Team California brought home 14 medals, with Izagani taking first place for Pop Music History (MS).
