Graduation, Promotion and End of School Year Events
We have received guidance from the California Department of Public Health that we will need to follow for our end of school year events. You can access the guidance here. Our elementary, middle and high school administrative teams are working on their plans for promotions and graduations. Schools will be communicating these plans with their communities as soon as possible.
7-11 Committee Update
On April 21, the 7-11 Committee met and narrowed their focus to two schools: Rancho and Lu Sutton Elementary Schools. The Committee also narrowed down the criteria to guide their discussions and their next meeting is Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at 5:30 pm. Information can be found on the 7-11 Committee webpage https://nusd.org/711/.
The Derek Chauvin Verdict
Just three days ago, Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder for his role in the death of George Floyd. I believe this was a critical verdict for accountability that marks the beginning of this work. Structural racism remains a significant challenge in our obstacle for so many nationally and locally including within NUSD.
In the months since George Floyd’s death, NUSD has worked closely with our student equity groups and our Educators of Color to develop our anti-racist education resolution. We have started taking actions based upon this resolution. Additionally, we are in the process of updating our NUSD Equity Imperative Declaration through our Local Control Accountability Plan process. We acknowledge that we have work to do on eliminating structural racism from our schools. This shows up in many ways just a few of which include the predictability of student achievement data by ethnicity, suspension rates of our students of color and truancy. NUSD is deeply committed to this hard yet critical work.
The 2021-2022 school year
We continue to hear positive news about next year, the guidelines expected to be in place and data associated with the pandemic. All of this positive information aligns with our plans to have a full pre-pandemic return in the fall with appropriate mitigation measures in place to keep our kids and community safe.
Timeline for Virtual Only Learning Survey
In next week’s end of week communication, we will launch a survey to determine interest in a remote only option for students during the 2021-2022 school year. As this year comes to a close and NUSD prepares for a full pre-pandemic return to schools in the fall 2021, we recognize a virtual only learning environment has been beneficial for some students. The survey will gauge our community’s interest in creating a virtual only program within our NOVA Independent Learning School.
We hope that, should you be interested in having your child/ren participate in virtual only learning next year, you will let us know so that we can take that into account in our planning.
