Dear NUSD Family,

As I am sure many of you have heard, NUSD and the Novato Federation of Teachers did not reach an agreement and are at an impasse in negotiations. While there is much speculation about the nature of this impasse, I will not get into the specifics. I will say that we continue our commitment to an agreement and that I care deeply about our teachers, students, and community.

Like many, I am frustrated with this impasse. NUSD has repeatedly met, in good faith, to negotiate a memorandum of understanding regarding hybrid learning. To date we have not been able to come to a mutually agreeable plan. We continue to work with the Novato Federation of Teachers through the impasse process.

In the meantime, NUSD continues to work towards our Board approved reentry plan discussed in last Friday’s letter (October 9, 2020). We continue to keep the safety of our students and staff at the forefront and will meet or exceed the guidance from our public health agencies.

Additionally, we are moving forward and working with the reentry task force (including teachers and parents) on bell schedules and the instructional plan for our elementary, middle, and high schools. Those meetings began last night with the elementary group and will continue throughout the week as we know our community needs these important decisions.

Sincerely,

Kris Cosca
