Police Urge Drivers To Watch For Kids In Novato On National Walk, Bike And Roll Day

Schools and families are being encouraged to promote safer trips to school as pedestrian and bicycle traffic increases.

NOVATO, CA — More kids could be walking, biking and rolling to school Wednesday, and Novato police are asking drivers to slow down and stay alert.

The reminder comes as schools and families participate in National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day, an annual event promoting healthy and safe ways for students to get to and from school.

“This annual event is a reminder that students biking and walking to school safely is a shared commitment,” said Sgt. Trevor Hall. “It also reinforces the need for drivers to slow down, stay alert and look out for children using crosswalks, sidewalks and bike lanes to get to school.”

Police urged drivers to be especially cautious around school zones, crosswalks and school buses, while students were encouraged to plan routes away from heavy traffic when possible.

Students who walk, bike or roll should use sidewalks or designated paths, wear properly fitted helmets when riding, and use crosswalks at intersections. Police also advised students to look left-right-left before crossing, make eye contact with drivers and avoid electronic devices that could distract them.

Students are also encouraged to wear bright clothing during the day and reflective materials or use a flashlight when traveling in the dark.

Schools can register their participation through Walk Bike to School, which tracks participation in the nationwide event.

The program is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
